The setup: 92 900s conv. My A/C was converted to R-134a about 2 years ago. Last week my passenger side cooling fan burned out. To cool down the engine, I have turned the a/c on to kick in the other fan on the driver's side. I have also turned the heat on to max at the smae time (so only cold air is coming through the center vent) to dissapate the heat.
Yesterday in city highway traffic 5:15 pm- stop and go, white smoke started pouring out from under the hood with a loud hissing noise. Pulled over and popped the hood (on the FDR in NYC - a nightmare) and low and behold -it's the a/c compressor discharging r134 a from one of the three 'valves' on the front of the compressor (can't remember which - but see image). I killed the a/c and got off the highway let the car cool down for an hour and no more a/c - assume the kill switch shut off because no more r134a.
ANy thoughts on what failed - is this a big deal? I assume I screwed up something by running the heat with the a/c on.
**A note for anyone else caught in this situation in the future- I noticed a better solution than using the a/c to turn on the other fan....the fan plugs where the same on both sides - so I have now unplugged the driver's side fan and plugged it into the passengerside plug (just do not use the a/c).
