Same thing happened to me - twice. But then I only own two SAABs.
The brass valve on the right in your photo is a high pressure relief valve. Same thing happened to my 9000 last year, big whoosh and a cloud of white gas in traffic; the 92 900 failed this year from the same piece, only slowly, dribbling the freon and oil mix onto the engine. Had an indie fix the 9000, they found nothing wrong and just replaced that valve and its been fine since. the 900 is a commuter/hauler/errand/emotional crutch and the A/C wasn't as important so it waits until I can get around to it (after the headliner, after the cruise control, etc.).
I believe the valve is $55 if you do it yourself, and there was a discussion about a particular supplier that was known to fail, could be Parker, or maybe that was the brand to get. The dealer was clueless so I as I said, I didn't buy the part and let the indie handle it, about $180 all in for the part, a purge and new oil and 134a.
Hope this helps.
