Daniel,
I think that's about what it cost when Tom Townsend replaced my master cyl., but I'm not sure. His site is down at the moment, so I can't check his estimate page, but that's probably in the ballpark.
Check the brake fluid level and make sure there are no fluid leaks at each wheel, just to be safe. (Your dash light should tell you if fluid is low, but sensor could be stuck up, in "ok" position, or light bulb burnt out.) But your symptoms really point to master cylinder, to my thinking.
When it gets worse, you will eventually have NO brakes, except for parking/emergency brake, which applies the front wheel brakes through 1987 model year 900 cars, and applies rear wheels on 1988-newer cars. This takes a LOOOONG time/distance to stop the car. Even at this near "total" loss, a HARD, FAST hit on the pedal may slow the car a good bit--hard stomp on the pedal seems to flare out seals and push that fluid forward toward the brake calipers, instead of letting the fluid leak past the seals to rear of piston.
I forgot to state in previous post that corrosion/gunk in master cylinder cuts and abrades the seals, causing them to leak fluid back past themselves, to rear of master cyl. behind piston.
If your car is 1990 or newer, then it has antilock brakes. Masters for these cars may be more expensive--I have no history with ABS m.c. failure.
