Since you have read the car bible and knows everything.
Why would anyone leave the wheel ON the car when doing an upper ball joint??? That makes it a lot harder to reach the bolts.
If with wheel you mean steering knuckle and wheel hub, yes they can stay on the car while doing the upper ball joint.
Yes, if he allowed the steering knuckle, hub and drive shaft to fold out too much, it is a chance that one of the three bearing races on tri pod have been dislodged. But it would take quite a lot to make that happen if the inner axle boot is still clamped to the inner driver.
The axle boot kind of guides the tripod back and forth into its proper position.
Yes, if the drive shaft has been removed from steering knuckle/wheel hub and IF the axle/C/V nut didn't get tighten down properly it will kill the wheel bearing instantly when the two halves of bearing race comes apart (even just slightly).
