Some ball joints have a slightly smaller tapered shaft and it protrude further through the steering knuckle demanding a washer to be placed in between.
A washer where the hole is bigger that the tapered shaft.
Sometimes the ball joint and steering knuckle hole have been worned out from a loose nut and even a washer is not enough to pull the tapered shaft securely into the knuckle.
