Cut out a full boost can be hitting the overboost fuel pump cut off. This is a fairly dramatic event. If it's only a pulsing cut back, the knock sensor might just be doing its job.

Flat spots under boost can also be caused by an AMM that's going south, plug gaps that have eroded and need regapping, or even a bad distributor rotor.

If all was well recently, I would suspect the tune up items or a bad AMM.
