Sonya...

First, this site is pretty much about how to fix problems on a Saab. Thus, that would create the impression that it always needs work. Second, a 1990 is 13 years old and it will need repair no matter what type of car. My rule of thumb in buying an old saab is how well has it been maintained, the rust level (very difficult to fix) and that I can do most repairs myself. Thus, owning an old saab is relatively inexpensive for the quality of car you get.

On maintenance everyone says i changed the oil every 3k miles. If there are receipts for this, that is huge. The second is the regular maintenance. My most important recommendation on this is how often was the coolant changed.

Depending on the mileage, a timing chain is extremely important. I am not sure of the recommended mileage, but in my experience under 175,000 you s hould be ok. Over, it should be replaced.

One last piece of advice is that expect to put 10% to 15% of the cost into the car after you buy it. I've been buying used cars for a long time and generally, even when you think it is perfect, it still requires something.

Good luck on making your decision. I recently picked up a 1993 for $800. It needed a fair amount of work which is mostly labor and a few visits to a junk yard ($90 spent on out of pocket costs thusfar). Thus, I think the price was fair.
