A SAAB is not cheap to maintain. Because of the age of the car, in my opinion, you have to be prepared to put in as much as $1,500 in parts/labor over the next 12 months. Next year, be prepared to put in another $1,500. After that, $1,000/year. This is above and beyond oil changes, tires, brakes - general routine maint. items. If it is a manual transmission, you need to make sure it is in very good condition. Any problems with it slipping out of gear or other misbehavior indicates replacement. And if so, that could be a $2,000 plus event - and therefore you should look for a different vehicle. As you can tell from the board, there are a lot of dedicated owners and drivers here. The number and frequency of problems is not an indication of the quality of the cars. The quality of the classic 900 is, in my opinion, high. In closing, if what you need is reiliable and consistent transportation on a budget - then buy a Honda. But if what you want is the most unique driving experience - then carefully select a SAAB. Bona fortuna.
