Just don't want to bottom-out any more

My 1985 900 has a sagging rear end from the few hundred pounds of towing equipment the previous owner kept in the trunk.
Lately I've found myself bottoming out (surprise surprise) with a full car of people, skis on the roof, and a trunk full of gear.
What are some of the ways to solve this problem? I've been thinking about replacing shocks and springs in the rear, but I've been warned that this might make handling very poor. If the front shocks are in decent condition then I don't think this would be a big issue.
I've only got an 8-valve, so I'm not looking for the same handling as someone with a turbo. I just don't want to hear that awful scraping noise when I move out of driveways.
I've heard spacers mentioned. One side is a little bit lower than the other so this could be tricky.
