I had the engine resealed, new piston rings/bearings and a new cam chain/tensioner done for about $1500. Since R&R the engine is about $800 at local rates I figured doing this now was only a $700 bump if I did it separately. Besides, the rear seal was leaking about a quart every 3K miles....messing up my garage floor.
It was startling how quiet the overhauled engine was. If I had to do it over again I might have insisted on a head rework, new valve seals, etc., but the OEM head seems to be holding up fine at 260K. Without a leakdown test, however, who knows. Plus I overboost to 18psi......when it burns a valve, THEN I'll know!!! :>)
