I question your less than .5 mm difference. I think more along the lines of at least 5 mm. Whatever the difference in length, any difference means the tripod bearing rides that much more outward along the cup inner surface. I've seen in junk yards what happens when an inner driver "explodes", where one of the three torque bearing prongs shears away. Perhaps because of the inner driver and axle being a mismatch?
The solid rotors will not match up with the pre-88 vented hub. Same goes for the vented rotors not matching up with the older solid hub. I suspect there's a difference between the brakes as well, at least the part of the brakes which come in contact with the brake pads. The axles, however, will fit from one to the other. No difference in length either. It's the i.d. which makes up the difference in length.
