I just wanted to add to what I said for future reference. When I said, "I suspect there's a difference between the brakes as well, at least the part of the brakes which come in contact with the brake pads." The word I was looking for was yoke - that part which directly pushes the brake pads against the rotor.
When I initially did my 82 solid to 87 vented rotor swap, I simply attempted to fit the 87 rotors on the 82 hub along with the older brakes. There was an obvious mismatch, by way of the rear of the yoke pressing against the rotor surface, well before the brake mounting bolts were even tightened. The following day I went back to pull the 87 hubs from which the rotors were pulled, plus the brakes, and the subsequent fit was perfect. The 82 axles matched up with the 87 hub no problem. But then I noticed that the tripod bearing was seated well outward from it's former position. Either the axle or inner driver was short. Turned out to be the inner drivers because the axles are the same length from 82 to 87. The end story to all this is that I ended up with 91 axles with the larger tripod bearings as well as the appropriate matching inner drivers. The 91 axle slipped into the 87 hub perfectly and the tripod bearing sits well inside the inner driver bearing surface.
