When test-driving the car, listen for a high-pitch whine in the upper gears when you step on the gas. If you hear this it is most likely the dreaded pinion whine, and you'll have to figure on having to replace/rebuild the transmission in the near future. (About $2000 to do this, depending on where you get the work done.) The engines on these cars are very durable and with normal maintenance can easily rack up hundreds of thousands of miles. The transmissions in comparison are very fragile. The 900's transmission will not stand up to abuse and for this reason it is probably not a good car to learn stick-shift on.
If the shifter interlock is still intact you have to put the car in reverse to take the key out, and the shifter will not move until unlocked with the key. This can be a pain, and if a valet or someone else not familiar with this feature attempts to drive the car they frequently wind up damaging the shifter by forcing it. On two of the 900s I've owned the shift interlock was removed, my current ride still has it.
A '93 model probably also has antilock brakes. This is another very costly item to repair.
