My picks for used c900s:

'84 (8vT) - Last, most refined year of the 8vT. '84s also have the distinction of having the most standard equipment, and the lack of a 900 badge on the trunk per RJS, which makes them cool. :)

'86 (16vT/NA) - The first year of the 16vNA, and the wiring issues of the '85 16vT were fixed. Relatively simple cars with no ABS, no SRS, nothing. Just pure 900. Last year of the snub-nose, only year of the snub-nose convertibles, last year of the notchback in north America. My personal favorite year.

'90 (16vT/NA) - Early issues with LH 2.4 boxes dying were fixed in '90, no 2.1l to give problems, all systems pretty reliable. No extra gizmos like power seats and headlight wipers to add extra weight (and block intercooler flow...:). 4-door turbos were [somewhat] available in North America.

After 1990, I don't really think much changed in terms of reliability. Arguably the transmission got better, but at this late stage of the game *any* 900 is gonna be looking at a tranny rebuild relatively soon, so you can always add that tranny... :) The '91+ cars are plenty nice, but I don't think quantifiably nicer than a '90 - they just cost more. The *only* exception, for me, would be a '91/'92 SE in Platana Grey. As far as convertibles go, they are simply fantastic. But purely from a cosmetic standpoint, and not mechanical.
