The 4 quick flashes is the EZK ignition. When the knock sensor hears something, it retards spark for a couple seconds. If it doesn't stop knocking it does it again. If that doesn't help, it flashes 4 quick flashes, but the ECU doesn't store an error code. You feel the retarded spark as that hesitation.
What kind of plug wires did you get? Some people have had problems with non-Bougicord brands, the knock sensor picks up false knock readings.
I guess the knock sensor mounting bolt tightness is important. Maybe you can take it off, clean the spot where it sits, tighten it properly. Maybe even the orientation of the sensor? Did you ever take it off?
Cheap, low-tech help... Techron fuel additive. Maybe (long shot?) it's some kind of combustion-chamber deposits? You're not supposed to need high-octane gas.
