You're definitely on the right track with the above.
I'd check out grounds first, especially the main ground point on the passenger side of the crossmember under the radiator. Remove all the wires there, sand them and the ground point down to bare metal, and reassemble. Check the ground on the transmission as well.
Next, by all means pull the voltage regulator and check the brush length. Replace if severely worn (I believe 10mm is the minimum length, but could be wrong)
Check that your alternator is properly grounded to the engine; the little ground wire from the alternator to the block seems to be a common failure point where it will partially fail within the insulation but appear fine externally. With the engine running and a bunch of electrical accessories operating (radio, headlights, a/c, whatever else) check the voltage difference between the alternator case and the engine to see if it is properly grounded to the engine. If this is fine (i.e. zero voltage between the alternator case and the engine,) check the voltage difference between the alternator case and the negative battery terminal.
I had similar (but more severe) symptoms and just this weekend replaced my negative battery cable, partially fixing the problems.
Good luck!
