Ros,
I seem to be one of the few on this forum who did have the bearings go bad on my alternator, which is usually due to extremely over-tightened belts. The result is not vibration, instead it is an almost steady whine or scream, changing with the rpm of the engine, but it takes probably 10,000+ miles or so to become annoying.
The important point here is that all decent Saab mechanics would usually replace the 'rubber mounts,' aka bushings, when replacing an alternator.
Perhaps even more troubling is that C900 alternators usually stop charging due to a bad voltage regulator, which can be bought for less than $40, and changed (without removing the alternator) with a regular screwdriver, which makes me wonder whether or not your girlfriend's '91 really needed a brand new alternator or not. Even so, the bushings should've been replaced while replacing the old one.
All of bad diagnosis/repair history you've listed tonight leads me to believe that your mechanic took you for a ride down s#@t's creek with a turd for a paddle...
Sorry!
Berle
