Hi!
It's not without regret that I join this post here (even though it seems very helpful and interesting to read and share experience!:-)

I recently bought a Saab 900 Turbo 1988 for a song (almost US$1200) and knew I may have some things to change or repair.
But the fact is that I know litterally nothing about mechanics (or almost nothing) so I knew I would have to spend time and efforts in it(and this is part of the game and the pleasure to buy an aged Saab, isn't it?)

Anyway, so here is why I'm here today: all began 3 days ago... It began with hard starting (having to often try 3 or 4 times to start the car before it really does). So the first day, this was the only trouble I could point out. Then, the day after I had to see my mechanic to have quotes for changing the muffler (some starting problem occurred). I was unlucky... he had quit for the day! :-/
On my way back, I had to get some gas (cause I noticed my consumption was surprisingly high! about 15 litres per 100km! this something I also wanted to understand and solve of course). So, while filling in my fuel tank, I noticed it smelled gas very strongly! OK I was in a gas station but though it was very and unusually strong! I had a glance under my car and I figured out the gas was leaking from th etank area! Nice!! f*** f**** f**** (sorry my english vocabulary is not highly developped) After a few minutes I said to myself it was not a big deal! maybe just a pipe to change or a clamp to tighten... or a patch for the tank.

So, I knew this had to be repaired soon but thought it was not compromising the general state of my car (and maybe it really does not).
Well, it was the evening of the day after I was on my way back to home that 5 minutes after I started driving that my car suddenly shut down! Everything was done except the hazard lights I could hopefully turn on. Tried to start the car again and nothing happened. :-( As I said, I'm a novice in mechanic so I asked for help for boosting my car with wires... I found somebody who was willing to help me (hopefully! I was out of Montreal dowtown and everything was closed... a sunday evening at 10 pm)

After another step in a gas station where I found a very cool guy who even made the trip back to my place with me in case my car breaking down, I arrived and decided to charge my battery for the night.
Indeed, he told me it was probably the alternator which was down (BTW he told me he may be able to find somebody to repair the alternator for about US$50-60... is that possible?)
The day after, that is today, I took the battery back in the car, plugged it and started the car (not without difficulties.. the car was still hesitating at start-up). On the road again ;-)! On my way to the work my car again was out of power but hopefully just in front of a big car center(Canadian Tire). I finally asked them just to make a inspection and tell me what is the problem.

I don't know if it can help but while driving this morning, my car had lot of trouble to accelerate. Is it because of a lack of power coming into the spark plugs?

Here is the situation now. I must call my "night helper" to know if he can have an alternator for the price he told me and then make a decision.

Hope I'll have good news...

Olivier
