Ignition Problems after Crank Pulley replacement

I thought I had done everything correctly on my Crank Pulley Replacement. I followed the procedures and advice on this and other Boards, but after finishing the job and firing up the engine ('90 900S 16-Valve Non-Turbo) it is running unevenly and stumbles. If I rev it then it seems like the ignition is cutting out intermittantly.
I mounted the new aperture plate on the back of the new Crank Pulley. I made sure that it was in the same position as the original - I think there IS only one way to mount it as the three screw holes are not at even positions degree wise. Everything seemed to line up just fine with the pulley on the crankshaft mating with the keyway.
I had no problems with the Crank Position Sensor before and I was very careful to avoid damaging it during the remove/replace. I checked the connector which seems to be fine. Do these Sensors work intermittantly when they go bad or do they usually either work or fail?
Any suggestions??
To say this is very frustrating would be huge understatement. Good news is that the horrible metallic screeching caused by the failed Crank Pulley has gone.
Andy.
