A dead CKP sensor is easy, the car wont start.
A partially damaged sensor can create whatever problem you can think of.
Here's a picture from a 9000 where the sensor had come loose and the crank pulley had rubbed a hole in the sensor casing, touching the innards sometimes.
The engine ran perfect on idle except for a stumble now and then when the pulley shorted out the circuit.
The gap in wave signal that you see created a split second hick up (the gap is actually 10 ms wide)
When I revved the engine, the cut outs and stumbles got more aggressive when the sensor was hitting the pulley even more.
