a friend of mine just gave me an 89 saab 900 with a few problems - no reverse, oil leak and bad (radiator?) hose. the bad hose was on the top of the engine in front of the driver's seat. i bought a replacement hose and put it in there but in the process i got a pretty good amount of coolant all over the place. the next time i tried to start the car, it was turning over but it wouldn't start. after trying to start it for about 10 minutes, it finally caught and started up. i drove it for about an hour with no problem and parked. the next morning it started right up and then died. i started it up again and gave it some gas and drove it for about an hour no problem. about 2 hours later i tried to start it and it would turn over but not start. this has been the status for a few days now.
i checked all my fuses and they're ok. i figure there's either a spark problem or a fuel delivery problem. so i've been working to figure this out.
as far as the spark problem goes:
1. i replaced the distributer cap and rotor and that didn't help.
2. i figure with the oil leak (burn?) the spark plugs might've gotten gunked up but i haven't had a chance to check them yet.
3. it's a long story but i don't have a ratchet set for the next few days so i haven't had a chance to check for spark on the spark plug wires, cause there's that plate covering those things.
as far as the fuel delivery problem goes:
1. i jumped fuse 27 to 30 to check to see if i could hear the fuel pump and i could hear it.
2. i've heard that sometimes the fuel filter gets too dirty and that causes problems. anyone know where that is? what should that look like?
up until i changed that hose, it started and ran with no problems. so i feel like the coolant might've shorted something. i've also noticed that, after i try to start the car when i'm getting out of the car, i generally get a real light shock from the body. i'm not sure how much of this info is useful but i really want to figure this out and get this thing going again. any advice or ideas?
thanks,
steve
