On my '84 900S. Same scenario with the battery light and then the car went dead. I took the car to a Seattle indy and the alt. was good, battery was dead but was fine after recharged and ended up replacing a switch or relay for the alternator that wouldn't allow the alt. to charge the system. It became stuck in the no charge position and was replace for $80. Unfortunately at the time I didn't pay much attention to the fix and went on my way so I don't have an exact name for the part. I was just so grateful that I could get out of the shop for only 80 bucks after being left on the highway.
Maybe someone out there knows the official name of this part.
Hope this helps a little.
