Here's my story - Sorry for long post:
Our 1990 900S developed a severe metallic screeching sound a few months ago. Diagnosis and input by members on this board and an independent Saab mechanic pointed towards the Harmonic Balancer. I replaced all the following with new parts: Oil Pump Seal (O-Ring), Crankshaft Oil Seal, Aperture plate, Harmonic Balancer, Alternator Mounting Bushes (all), Voltage Regulator/Brush assembly, All the drive belts.
Yesterday my daughter was driving and the radio would quit and then return. Then the headlights dimmed and the Anti-Lock warning lamp came on. She made it as far as a mall parking lot (any excuse to go shopping!!) where the car died and would not restart. Cellphone to Dad and I drive out with my Booster pack and an assortment of tools.
On the initial inspection I discover that the outer of the two Alternator Belts is AWOL and the inner is loose enough that I can turn the Alternator pulley by hand! I tighten up the remaining belt as far as I can and use the Booster pack to Jump Start the engine which fires immediately. Anti-Lock light is still on and I notice a screeching noise when the engine is revved. My daughter sayes, "its been doing that for a while but it goes away on the highway" Arghhh!! Cannot pinpoint the sound although it seems to be from rear of Cam Cover - but hard to be sure. We decide to drive home, but as soon as she puts her foot on the Brake Pedal to select Drive, the engine stalls. I restart it with the trusty Boost Pack but as soon as I remove the leads the engine stalls. Oh, and now the 'Check Engine' lamp is on and there are no Dash Lights or Headlights.
I give up and call the Auto Club for a flatbed back to the house.
Tonight I start the diagnosis, but I'm looking for ideas. I can see how with loose and missing belts the Alternator might not have been fully charging the battery (which was new last year), but how did the belts get loose in the first place? They were tight after the initial replacement and were checked a couple of weeks afterwards. The two belts were from the same supplier and were the same size, although I must admit that the outer belt did seem a bit less tight than the inner, but they both seemed tight enough. Could they have stretched that much in a couple of months? I don't understand why the Battery Lamp didn't come on. I'm also perturbed about the screeching noise although I suppose that could still be a slipping (single) Alternator Belt. What has the Anti-Lock Warning Lamp have to do with all this? By the way, I recently cleaned and tightened all the main ground wires and the Alternator ground wire is still in place.
Any other ideas or things I should check??
