Since the belts were unevenly tensioned, it's probable that the alternator bushings were deteriorated and they just got worse in time. These hold the alternator in alignment and isolate any alternator vibration.
When the battery charge is too low, nothing quite works right and the ABS motor doesn't have enough voltage to keep the accumulator charged, that's probably one reason that you got the ABS light.
At the very least, to get it running (and keep it running till you get it home) you need to put a fully charged battery in the car so the voltage at the terminals is above the minimum required by the fuel injection, etc.
