Hi Folks-
I've got some questions regarding cis pressure testing. First, some background.
I have an 86 Saab 900 that's been having some serious flooding problems. Replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires, replaced what had become a 50/50 gas/oil mix with fresh oil. Still running crappy. Did lots of research here on the board, and came to the conclusion that if I was going to solve this thing, I needed to stick my nose in the Bentley book and get a CIS pressure tester gauge.
So, when I removed the line from the fuel dist. that goes to the warm-up reg, I was expecting a gush of fuel. Nada. It's only been 3 days since I ran it last. Should this be the case normally?
Okay. So I perform the first test for line pressure. When looking at the Line Pressure table in the Bentley, I was a little confused about the meaning of "checking" and "setting" value. I guessed that the checking value is the value reached when the pump is on, and the setting value is where it backs off to after you switch the fuel pump off. Am I correct?
And here's what happened. The meter climbed as high as 4.9 bar, which corresponds to the ballpark figures in the "checking" value on the table. I switched off the fuel pump, and the meter gradually drops and settles at 2.9 bar, which is really honkin' low, right?
So, I'm guessing that since my fuel pump and fuel filter are brand new, my problem is a leak somewhere (duh), and according to the Bentley, their favorite culprit would be the pressure relief valve. Now, in the picture, the prv seems like a nice solid part that shouldn't need replacing due to wear, so maybe some cleaning, o rings and maybe some shims to adjust it and I can be back business. Or should I not screw around and just get a whole new PRV? I guess I should also suspect leaking injectors, no? My hoses are pretty nice and flexible, and I don't see any external leaks.
Thanks for reading this far, and thanks for any advice. This board is a really fine resource.
