Thanks for responding. I have the tester hooked up as you described. I called it line pressure in my post, but it's also referred to as system pressure. The test is performed with the engine cold and the valve on the tester closed. That's the first test in the Bentley book. This test measures the "fuel pump's ability to correctly pressurize the entire system from the tank to the fuel distributor and back again". The one you describe as running pressure is called "residual pressure", which is the third test, and (according to the book) can't be performed until your system pressure and control pressure check ok.
So this drop in pressure, from what I understand is lower than what the Bentley book allows, seems to mean I have a leak somewhere in the system, explaining the flooding and inability to start after operating at full temp (forgot to mention that one).
