Why a hitch-mount?

While a hitch-mounted rack may be more convenient for loading/unloading the bikes, I personally prefer roof racks. I would only consider a hitch-mount rack for a convertible.

Roof racks are much more versatile. You can carry all sorts of unwieldy stuff up there, making your hatchback a real cargo-hauler. I've been able to fit as many as 5 bikes on my roof at once (with only 2 fork-mount bike attachments, the other 3 bikes were bungied/strapped in an upright position with toe-clip straps holding the tires to the crossbars), as well as countless skis, snowboards, ladders, lumber, furniture, roofing material, even a shipping crate with a large electronic sign.

Remember that you probably can't open the hatch without removing the bikes from the hitch-rack, and then removing the rack attachment or flipping it down. Even with lumber or other long items on a roof rack, the hatch can be opened far enough to get stuff into or out of the trunk.

There are many more options for rack attachments for roof racks, too. The main decision to make is square-bar (Thule) vs. round-bar (Yakima).
