I have Yakima Rain Gutter Towers and I'm amazed how strong they are. I have carried easily over 500 lbs at a time with no problems. With a roof rack you can bolt on a pallet like I do and haul all kinds of stuff. I got some straps that hook right onto the bars of the rack. Also you can open the hatch with bikes on the roof and bikes are great to hold stuff on the roof when you tie it all down.
