Tim,
For what is it's worth, don't go too far away from the SAAB specs. Sure try and get the 'toe in' reduced to soften the outer scrubbing but I don't know if it is really worth altering the alignment.
The first car I had was a '86 EMS 2dr. I went through the same queries and notions that I think you are having. Sure, the tyre wear is not what one would hope for, but you have to recognise what the front tyres are going through on these vehicles. The weight distribution alone is considerable, in the order of 70% Front/30% Rear. That's in a static state. When fuel, passengers and or luggage etc. are included, the distribution is altered proportionally.
When the car is in motion, weight transfer is quite intense for the front suspension. Hence, ball joint wear, bushings flexing and so on. Under braking, up to 90% is easily transfered to the front.
If the suspension is altered too far away from the specs, the tyre won't react correctly under braking and premature brake lock will occur due the pitch change across the tyre.
I now have a '93 900i and unfortunately, the steering is nowhere as precise as the '86.
If it give you goose bumps of pleasure when it takes a corner, I say don't touch it and put up with the tyre wear, otherwise you may loose the magic these cars seem to have.
Consider carefully.
Cheers
Clive
