I'll the second the whirrign sound as being somewhat normal.
If it goes away when you kick in teh clutch, it's the throw-out bearing.
Mine has always done it, on bothe '78 99Turbo and '86 900S.
I was in the embarrassing position of going back to the dealer with my '78 and complaining about the noise; the mechanic at least didn't laugh at me.
It made a whirring noise for 8 yrs, and my ;86 has made the whirring noise for 18.
Just my experience.
