I have the exact same problem on my '91 900S, the linkgage seems to be OK, the shift lever is tight and precise....is engaging the 5th gear that is the problem I really need to ram it in order to engage it.., the oil level is OK....could it be the type/weight of the trans oil..?.., what would be the recommended viscosity..?
