Another idea for both you guys...
On the shifter shaft, between the firewall & the gearbox, is a clamp that can be loosened to allow the shaft to twist. If that's been messed up, it might cause the problem.
The pin at the bottom of the shift lever itself is what limits the sideways motion of the shift lever. If that's not synched properly with the transmission, then the shifter mechanism in the tranny isn't REALLY lined up with 5th. There's a different technique for adjusting that, depending on what year car. I don't remember the details & I don't have our '89 any more...
