First you probably want to rule out problems with the lever & linkage. Is the lever sloppy side-to-side? Couple things to check...
There's a coupling on the shift shaft, between the firewall & tranny. It's got a rubber bushing that can start coming apart with age & oil.
Then you can check the shift lever pivot ball. Pull up the rubber boot, there's a ring with 3 screws. Are they coming apart? Greased up OK?
The other thing is a bushing where that shaft passes thru the shift box under the console. Several inches forward of the shift lever. Our '89 had that bushing fall apart, so when you moved the lever side-to-side, the shaft would move side-to-side rather than spin like it should.
