I think I'm changing my mind on the battery. The very first thing I did was to have a very reputalbe shop check it out before I started digging into the car, that's what kept me from damning it earlier.
Measuring the currents, there is no way 40 ma would discharge the battery on it's own as quickly as it's been going, I figured those measurements were good.
Regarding the alternator, although no garuntee, it was replaced just a little over a year ago. I'll follow your recommendations on measuring the voltage, but I presume that's all ok since I'm not having any problems if I don't let the car sit.
The battery is about 4 years old as best as I know. Again, that was my first suspect, time to revisit the shop.
