When this problem occurred on my '90, it turned out to be a bad ground wire from the alt housing to the engine block. I don't know about your '92, but on my '90 it's a short (6"?), small (12 ga?), black wire that runs from the bottom corner nut on the back of the alt housing (closest to the engine block, facing the radiator) to a screw on the engine block behind the oil filter.
This gnd wire should've been replaced with a new one when they replaced your alt. If not (or if they left it off all together), simply run some new wire from any of the housing nuts to one of the wire gnds on the top of the engine. (I couldn't get to the original mounting screw w/o removing the alt, & I didn't want to do that.) Get as close to 12 ga wire as possible, with the minimum being 16 ga. I used dual 18 ga lamp cord (probably close to 16 ga combined thickness?), & that's been working well, but I'll replace it with a single 12 ga wire this summer.
