We had an '89, & I never had to actually dismantle the alternator, so I don't know about that capacitor. Maybe filter out the ripple from the rectifier?
But I know the excitation comes through the little light bulb. If it burns out or comes unplugged the alternator won't charge. If the bulb never worked, but the bulb itself is OK, what about a wiring harness connection on the back of the cluster? What about a bad connection from the bulb-holder to that film/printed-circuit stuff on the back of the cluster? Wrong-wattage bulbs can heat & warp the plastic underneath that film so the contact goes open.
The backwards engine was kinda interesting. The first time I had to tighten the drive belts I couldn't believe how little room there was. But I got used to it.
