The brushes are included with the voltage regulator, which is located on the back(towards front of car) of the alternator. It is held by two philips screws. One screw is easy and the other has limited access. The best way to get it out is usually with a small needle nose vice grip. Once loosened, you can turn it out by hand. If the brushes are less that 5mm or down to stubs, you might be lucky and fix your problem with a new regulator. I have soldered in new brushes, but since the regulators are <$30 so it's almost not worth the trouble of soldering new brushes. The brush kits are about $8 and you need 3 arms to solder them in.
If you have your shop do it, I would ask them to check the regulator brushes before they throw in a new alternator. If the brushes are not worn to stubs, I'll bet your alternator is shot. If possible, insist on a Bosch alternator.
The garden variety rebuilt units don't last very long and I suspect they don't even check all the diodes in the rebuild process. I have a Bosch ready to go in when an el cheapo I put in fails. It's starting to give the occasional "battery light on until you rev the engine" symptom of upcoming failure.
