Get thee to a shop with an emissions tester...run the engine and have the guy hold his tester probe over the open expansion tank (take the cap off!). If the tester indicates positive for hydrocarbons, it's a lead pipe cinch you have a bad headgasket.
BTW...loss of coolant every 1000K miles isn't so bad, that's every 1,000,000 miles!!!! But if you meant every 1000 miles then that's generally indicative of a bad headgasket or bad expansion tank cap. If you have coolant around the expansion tank cap, the expansion tank cap should be tested or replaced (I think the green ones are the de jour color for all the upgraded/current caps. Make sure you have the correct psi...see the dealer).
If everything is dry but you lose coolant it's generally the headgasket.
