After my 1500 mile trip home from Minnesota, during which I lost the exhaust (cat back), I haven't been driving my 900 much. The 9000 is a much nicer commuter car.
However, after the trip, the 900 ('89 900S, 173k) has developed some issues. First, it starts very rough. Over the past 7-9 months, it has been developing a long cranking problem where I usually end up needing to give it gas to get it to start and then "manually" idling it with the gas pedal for a few seconds. Then, everything would be fine.
NOW, though, the car starts and runs rough for 5-10 seconds before finally quieting down. In the past few months, it has developed a hunting idle problem (~900-1200) and sometimes when I start her up, she'll just sit there idling at 1200rpms... and won't stop. After some driving, the idle drops back to 900ish, and then starts hunting eventually. The inconsistency is both frustrating and puzzling.
The car seems to be running rich -- not only does it seem a little sluggish (especially noticed around 2800-4000 rpms) and almost hesitant, but when it starts sometimes a little cloud of black smoke comes out the tailpipe and when I stop and turn off the car, I can smell gas in the exhaust.
Otherwise, the car seems to be running well and even has its moments of running excellently. No oil or coolant loss, etc etc.
I know that these topics have been addressed on the board before, individually, but I am hoping that someone sees this combination of factors and has a diagnosis! My theories are: O2 sensor, AMM, FPR...
TIA,
Tim B.
