Tim,
Sounds like my the cold start issues on my Mom's 1990 base 900 and my '89 900S project car. They perked up and had much improved cold starts after replacing the AMM in each car.
If you have a SAAB pal with an '88 to '90 900S, an '89 or '90 base 900, or a '89 to '93 900 Turbo, (and theirs runs fine), try swapping their AMM into your car. Don't use any other years' AMM from a 900, as they have different fuel injection systems. Also, see if you can find one used at nearby junkyard, etc.
I would NOT let this go unattended for very long because if raw gas hits your catalytic convertor, you can have a fire (documented and lamented by several 900 owners).
You can also check the FPR vacuum hose (this only makes sure the FPR diaphragm has not ruptured--doesn't test for proper operating pressure). With engine running, pull off the FPR hose, see if any fuel is coming out of the FPR where the vacuum hose connects to it. If so, FPR is bad and you'll need a new one.
Hope this helps,
Micah in NC
