I popped in a good FPR over the weekend and voila! The car starts after 1-3 cranks, no more wild swings in idle, it's running better altogether. I think perhaps the indication that it was just the FPR is that my fuel mileage didn't decrease significantly on the highway I still still getting 29-30mpg. Maybe I'll get back closer to the 31-32mpg I had when I first got the car :)
Anyway, if you have an extra FPR laying around and you're experiencing similar troubles, try putting it in -- it's a ten minute proposition and the results could be better than expected... I knew I had a problem with the FPR -- because it was leaking gas into the vacuum line -- but I didn't think it was the root source of the car's running troubles.
