Don't rush into it. Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 28 Jun 2004 11:24:13 In Reply to: ABS Accumulator Replacement, JimF, Mon, 28 Jun 2004 09:34:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's totally normal for the ABS pump to run after the car has been sitting, because it's normal for the accumulator to leak down over time. It's also normal for the ABS pump to run if the brakes have been used - something has to 're-charge' the system for the power used by the brake boost.
As cars age, the leak-down becomes a little faster. Replacing the accumulator won't fix this. With older cars, the ABS and Brake FLuid lights may stay on for 45 seconds or so if the car has been sitting overnight, and the pump will continue to run for another 30 seconds after the lights go out.
Simple test for the accumulator - start the car and let it idle until the pump stops running - usually 10-30 seconds after the lights go out. Now, pump the brake pedal hard and fast, like one hard press a second or so, until the ABS and Brake Fluid lights come on.
If it takes more than about a dozen presses for the lights to come on, the accumulator is fine. If the lights come on after 3 or 4 presses, the accumulator is shot.
