1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I'm starting to look for a classic 900 convertible, as a summer daily driver for my wife, and perhaps to keep long-term for an eventual restoration project.
I saw one on the street in my neighborhood today (in Minneapolis, MN), an '89 900 turbo conv, red, black top, beige leather, 5 speed, 120k miles. The seller wants $3700 for it, which I would jump on except for some issues.
The most obvious problem are the brakes. They are soft, and when braking hard from about 50 mph, they go all the way to the floor (if you were braking from 60 mph, I think the brake pedal would hit the floor first before the car stopped). But just a block later, the brakes started working again, although softly (the pedal goes about halfway before you get any braking).
Other issues: I don't think the car is getting full boost out of the turbo (the needle won't go past halfway into the orange), there are about 3 or 4 one inch rips in the roof, and there's some rust along the bottom inside of the passenger doors.
The good news: the interior is in very good condition, and the car clearly has been kept out of the sun (the original paint is not faded).
All of the problems can be fixed I suspect, although the rust is worrisome because we intend to keep the car long-term. It's a Minnesota car, and I wonder if we're just better off finding a 900 convertible down south somewhere to avoid the rust issue entirely.
So, should I consider it --- , or should I offer less than $3700 and if so how much less?
I'm a long time Saaber, starting with a '75 99, an '85 900, an '88 9000 turbo, and currently a '00 9-5 Aero, and I'd appreciate any advice.
