Loss of power for first 4-5 minutes then recovers...

I have a 91 900s classic which is giving me problems for the first 5 or so minutes of operation then it seems to go away. After shutting the car off for a minute or so and restarting it, if I hit the gas, the car has more than usual lag before ramping up the RPM's. Oh yeah... The beloved check engine light comes on too.
I was originally thinking the AMM was bad and users here agreed it was worth a check however I have the element appears to heat "red hot" as outlined in the Bentley manual 4sec after the car is shutoff. Is it worth purchasing a used AMM on EBAY or somewhere to try to fix the issue or is this likely not the culprit?
Recently (before the problem got this bad) I was noticing similar symptoms however they would correct themselves after about 20-30s. In response, I tried changing out the fuel filter, air filter, and plugs (all because they hadn't been done in 70k miles). This didn't seem to help the problem and if anything seemed to be the begining of the end for the problems.
I haven't checked the codes yet but don't have high hopes for them to tell me much. One other tid-bit of info is that if I shut the car off (while driving) and restart it the light resets itself and won't come back on until I hold the RPMS above 3k or on above average acceleration (studdars). After the car warms up, everything appears to correct itself.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!
