I would use JPS's recomendations first. As long as you are positive that you will have a leak free system before charging. If not:
1.Vacume down systen for at least 15 min(should yield 24-25 inches vacume)
2.Use a preset charge can of ester into the low side line through your gauge set.(synthetic ester is designed to work(mix) with mineral oil and will only reduce your system volume fractionally)
3.Charge system with gas(only!) into the low side of compressor just until drier window runs clear(and no longer!).
4.Enjoy your cold air.

I have done close to 100 of these. Vacuming down the system is key but making sure that there is no leaks is even more key. That is why I hate to break into a system which I know is not leaking(or more realisticly, leaking very very slowly). You need a good detector($150 or so) and a good vacume pump(my Robinair was $450). Or just borrow them. I think that if you are going to break into the system you might as well increase the area of the condensor which is what 134a needs to work as well as R12 but that's a lot of work for this job. I get 42-45 degree air doing it my way and really everyone seems to be happy with that.
JMO, John......

One more trick: Don't put the little blue and red snap on connectors on your car(they sometimes leak). Put one of the blue ones onto the center connector of your gauge set. That way you feed everything into the system through the gauges and your original valves and caps are used and you get two less places to leak. Plus you can work on other cars without having to pay for set after set of conversion ports. When you do your vacuming put the red(high pressure) hose on to your vacume pump. Your low pressure hose will stay attatched to your compressor for the entire fill.
