Years ago I lent my '84T to my girlfriend. I had been having problems with the ignition switch being gummy*, and after I started the car I had to kind nudge the key back to 'run' from 'start'. She didn't know that (read: I forgot to tell her), and when she drove the car the key was stuck in 'start', and the starter was energized and engaged the whole time! She was able to drive it several miles like this before the starter seized and locked up the motor, but while it was running she said there were dash lights illuminated and other odd behavior, including a grinding noise.
The similarities are the sticking key, the dash lights, and the noise, but I don't think you could drive your car for very long this way, and not on the highway. How much driving did you do?
(*It was gummed up with too many coffee spills and other debris; loosened right up with a shot of Brakleen followed by WD-40)
