If you have a voltmeter handy, check the terminal-to-terminal voltage on the battery. It may still not quite have enough charge to crank the starter.
It's quite possible that you had 2 different things going on at the same time - the voltage regulator (which you have now changed out) and the ground wire from the alternator case to the body. If the ground wire has fatigued so there are only a couple of strands conducting electricity instead of the entire wire, the charging system won't be able to keep up with the electrical demand and the battery charge will be used up.
If you have access to a battery charger, put it on overnight. Then it will hopefully start. Then, check the voltage between the alternator case and the negative battery terminal with the headlights and all of the accessories on. It should read less than 1/4 volt. If it reads more, you should make up a new alternator ground wire with wire lugs and #12 (or larger wire). Attach it to one of the nuts on the alternator case and the intake manifold.
Another possibility is that one of the battery cables has some internal corrosion and should be replaced. Check the cheap stuff first, though.
Push starting won't damage the starter.
