SAABs can take either way...

After driving motorcycles for a few years I was truly able to understand how important downshifting was to performance driving. No, SAABs are not Porsche's... but after owning many VW's these are aggressive cars with long gears for down shifting.
As you say brakes are cheaper than a clutch. I may be fortunate but my original clutch lasted over 200K with 40% left on the disk (failed due to bad seal). One clutch in 12 years isn't bad and at $500 was happy to have a new one. The <'90 C900 trannies were upgraded to the 9000 version helping the C900 cure its tranny woes.
There are ways, if you pay attention, to drive these cars hard without inflicting long term damage. I am very aware of my driving style and understand what that does to my car. And when you push harder on the brake you stop faster....let out the clutch simultaneously...surprise- no damage and you stop even faster. No point in arguing that. Knowing when to engage the clutch is the trick.....
I enjoy driving my cars and think that SAABs are well built. Whether its luck or good fortune, I've got good cars that love to be driven.
