I would suggest that avoiding engine braking takes away much of the pleasure found in driving a car like a Saab. If one is careful to match engine speed with the next lowest gear and applies a bit of double clutching to help the syncros, very little addional wear will take place. The key is to use the left side of the right foot on the brake and the right side on the gas. Clutch in, shift to N,clutch out, blip gas to new gear speed, clutch in, shift to next lowest gear, clutch out, all the while the left side of the right foot is controlling road speed thropugh the brake. It sounds good and feels good. I believe that is why we drive Saabs in the first place. Just my opinion.
