or to Break transmissions?

It seems like the silliest of ideas to employ the engine and transmission as part of the braking processes of our fine cars (86 SPG (my 2nd saab))

Im a Student in PA going to school, studying Geology (good stuff about the Iridium JohnB!) A bunch of my friends in their nicer cars, VW's WRX's and even less "modded" cars seem to love Engine braking, and I have read on this bulletin board the same thoughts.

Here is my take on it:

New Transmission = about $2000
New Clutch = about $200

or

New pads, and rotors = $300 bucks

It seems obvious to me that replacing the brakes every 3 years is cheaper than chewing up your trans synchros by downshifting everytime you want to stop. I have even seen it written that people think that engine braking helps you stop harder! try pushing on the brakes a little bit harder too. SURPRISE! you stop faster.

I can replace all my brake components in a little under 2 hours in a garage with 1 jack and stand. There is no way i could be convinced to try doing a transmission that way.

oh BTW, my buddy with the VW wolfsburg edition, his 5 speed went after 78,000 miles... used the trans to brake every time, the result was the car was crap to him after that.
